Country Star, Proud Spell Favored -- But Ashland Surpise Tightens Odds In Kentucky Oaks Future Odds

Stonerside Stable’s Country Star and Brereton C. Jones’ Proud Spell were upset victims in Saturday’s $500,000 Ashland Stakes (Grade I) at Keeneland, but the two fillies remained the top betting choices heading into the final day of wagering in Pool 3 of Churchill Downs’ 2008 Kentucky Oaks Future Wager.

Longshots Little Belle and Bsharpsonata finished 1-2 in the Ashland run over the Polytrack surface at Keeneland, but Country Star, who finished fifth in the Ashland, and Proud Spell, who was third, stood at odds of 5-1 after three days of betting in the third and final pool of the Kentucky Oaks Future Wager. Country Star had a slightly larger overall betting total and was the actual favorite at the end of Saturday’s betting.

Eight Belles, riding a three-race winning streak and the likely favorite in Sunday’s $250,000 Fantasy Stakes (GII) at Oaklawn Park, was close behind at 6-1. Bsharpsonata, who saw a streak of four straight stakes wins snapped in the Ashland, was the 7-1 fourth choice. The mutuel field, which includes all 3-year-old fillies other than the 23 individual betting interests in Pool 3, ended the day at 9-1. Pure Clan, who also runs in the Fantasy, was a 17-1 shot and Little Belle’s odds stood at 22-1 after the A.P. Indy filly scored her surprise win in the Ashland.

The Kentucky Oaks Future Wager is a minimum $2 wager and a win bet only. It offers fans the opportunity to bet on contenders for the Kentucky Oaks at odds that could be greater than those they would receive on the day of the race. There are no refunds in the Kentucky Oaks Future Wager.

Total betting during the first three days of the year’s final Kentucky Oaks Future Wager pool rose to $21,569 on Saturday.

Betting on Pool 3 of the Kentucky Oaks Future Wager is scheduled to resume at noon (all times Eastern) on Sunday, April 6. The pool will close at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday – 30 minutes after the conclusion of betting in the companion Kentucky Derby Future Wager. Winning payouts on the Kentucky Oaks Future Wager will be based on the odds in place at the close of betting.
