IEAH Stables has reached an agreement to acquire a majority ownership interest in the undefeated Pure Clan, a leading contender for the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs. She will race in the silks of IEAH Stables, and current owner Lewis Lakin retained a piece of ownership in the deal.
Pure Clan, a 3-year-old daughter of Pure Prize – Gather the Clan, by General Assembly, has won each of her four starts by a combined margin of 12 ¾ lengths. She has not raced since November of last year when she won the Grade 2 Golden Rod Stakes at Churchill Downs by two lengths, but is currently in training at Oaklawn Park.
She will remain in the barn of trainer Robert Holthus at Oaklawn, where she has already put in a pair of breezes in preparation for her next start – the Grade 3, $100,000 Honeybee Stakes on Sunday, March 16. From there, the Grade 2, $250,000 Fantasy Stakes, also at Oaklawn, on Sunday, April 6, would serve as her final prep for the Kentucky Oaks. Both Oaklawn races will be run at 1 1/16 miles on the main track.
The Grade 1, $500,000 Kentucky Oaks will be run at 1 1/8 miles on the Churchill Downs main track on Friday, May 2. The race is run as the sister race to the Kentucky Derby, which takes place the following day at Churchill, and is widely considered the most important race for 3-year-old fillies.
