Awesome Chic

Awesome Again x Trading (A.P. Indy)

Pedigree

Awesome Chic is bred to relish distances upwards of 1 1/8 miles. She is by the outstanding stallion Awesome Again, who thrived going a route of ground. Making just his third career start in the 1 1/4-mile Queen's Plate S., the bay roared to a 3 1/2-length victory in that classic for Canadian-breds. Awesome Again enjoyed a perfect six-for-six campaign as a four-year-old in 1998, with his highlight reel including scores in the 1 1/4-mile Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) and the 1 1/8-mile Whitney H. (G1) and Stephen Foster H. (G2). He signed off with a sterling mark of nine wins from 12 starts and a bankroll worth more than $4.3 million. At stud, Awesome Again is transmitting his stamina, judging by his progeny's Average Winning Distance of 7.4 furlongs. His runners have been exceptionally successful on Breeders' Cup Day. Awesome Again's son Ghostzapper romped in the 2004 Breeders' Cup Classic, becoming the only winning father-son duo so far in the Classic. On the same day that Ghostzapper wrapped up the Horse of the Year title, another son of Awesome Again, Wilko, surprised in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1). His fillies have gotten into the act by capturing the two most recent runnings of the Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1), Round Pond in 2006 and Eclipse Award winner Ginger Punch last fall.

Awesome Chic is out of Trading, whose lone victory came at seven furlongs. She has produced two prior winners -- Market Watcher (Boundary), who stayed as far as two miles on the all-weather in England, and the sprinter Hammering Henry (Gold Fever) -- but neither is anywhere near the class of Awesome Chic. Trading is a daughter of A.P. Indy, the winner of the 1 1/2-mile Belmont S. (G1) as well as the Breeders' Cup Classic during his Horse of the Year season in 1992. A son of legendary Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew, A.P. Indy has sired progeny with a hefty Average Winning Distance of 8.2 furlongs. Among his leading offspring are 2003 Horse of the Year Mineshaft, classic winners Rags to Riches (the first filly in 102 years to win the Belmont) and Bernardini (2006 Preakness S. [G1]), and current classic hopeful Majestic Warrior. A.P. Indy is also beginning to have an influence as a broodmare sire, with his daughters producing the likes of champion Wait a While (Maria's Mon), Grade 1 hero Bluegrass Cat, Any Given Saturday, and Kentucky Derby aspirant Z Humor (Distorted Humor).

Trading is a half-sister to Survivalist (Danzig), hero of the 2005 Gotham S. (G3). They were produced by the winning Mr. Prospector mare Miner's Game, who is herself a full sister to multiple Grade 1 star, $2.3 million earner and terrific stallion Seeking the Gold. Miner's Game is a half-sister to Grade 1 victor Fast Play (Seattle Slew). This is a stellar female line cultivated by the Phipps family. Its other illustrious representatives include Queen of the Stage, the champion juvenile filly of 1967, and six-time stakes winner and sire Reviewer.
