Trivia Time!!!
The winning owner of the Kentucky Oaks will receive a check for about $300,000. If the owner chose to take his winnings in flame-broiled cheeseburgers from Churchill Downs, how many cheeseburgers would he get?
Answer to follow....
5:26 pm
25-1 right now on A to the Croft. Smells like value.
5:23 pm
The rain has let up for the moment. Let's hope that's it for the weekend.
No matter how bad the weather gets, there is no better place to be this weekend than Churchill Downs. And I have no idea how Kentucky women stay so good looking in pouring rain. But they do.
5:04 pm
With well over 30 minutes to post, Pure Clan is the slight favorite in the Kentucky Oaks. I like her chances. But my money is going on A to the Croft, currently 27-1.
4:54 pm
Again, speed is ruling the day on the grass here at Churchill Downs. I didn't have the winner, but I bet a lot of sharp bettors did.
4:28 pm
CHEESEBURGER UPDATE:
OK. Here was my dilemma. The cheeseburger stand is outside the CDBCC, assuming it hasn't floated away a this point. So, rather than risk drowning, I elected to go with Hot Dog #1 rather than Cheeseburger #2.
I am not happy with my decision.
Does anyone besides me think A to the Croft has a chance to shock the Oaks field?
4:08 pm
90 minutes to go. I'm really hoping the rain lets up.
I just walked out to the grandstand. It's like a ghost town.
3:49 pm
I hope Wanderin Boy doesn't steal this like he did last year.
3:47 pm
It's high time for my 2nd cheseburger of the day. I'll go grab one, and report back. I'm expecting it to be delicious.
3:45 pm
I think they could hear that last clap of thunder in Lexington. Maybe even West Virginia.
3:43 pm
If you paid money for 1st floor tickets to the Kentucky Oaks today, are you:
A) Wet
B) Angry
C) Just happy to be here
D) Wet and Angry
E) Wet and Happy
3:39 pm
I just looked out the window of the Churchill Downs Blog Command Center (also known as the CDBCC), and I counted no fewer than 200 people wearing garbage bags.
Are raincoats really that hard to come by?
3:25 pm
Bobby Frankel and Frank Stronach, the trainer and owner of Ginger Punch, are in the paddock again as Giant Gizmo will attempt to take the Grade III Alysheba. This might be a big day for Frankel. He has Country Star in the Oaks.
3:17 pm
I'm pretty sure the rain drops are going to start cutting holes in the roof any second. Boy is it raining hard.
If I don't make it out of here alive, tell the world my story.
3:12 pm
We're about 2 1/2 hours from the Kentucky Oaks. If you aren't here in person, you can catch all the action on ESPN. They're on the air right now, or at least until the storm knocks them off the air.
3:09 pm
Note to bettors: Speed is holding on the turf.
Note to non-bettors: Start betting.
Just kidding.
3:00 pm
Not surprisingly, the track is now sloppy, and the turf is yielding.
2:54 pm
If you're coming out to Churchill Downs for the Derby tomorrow, I highly recommend you try the flame-broiled cheeseburgers. So, so tasty.
2:38 pm
I have to say that this Oaks Day crowd are a bunch of warriors. While the rain has stopped for the moment, the downpour we experienced a few minutes ago did not hurt their spirits.
2:27 pm
For all of you gamblers in attendance on this live blog this afternoon, I've put together a Pick 4 ticket that I really think you're gonna enjoy. We still have over 30 minutes to post for the 7th race, The Edgewood Stakes.
Pick 4.....2,5,6,8/5,6/1,2,10/6,9,11
$72 of fun.
2:15 pm
Ginger Punch romped in spite of leaping two puddles in mid-stretch.
The rain is really, really coming down. I feel bad for the nicely dressed ladies who don't have a seat under cover.
2:00 pm
It's raining. It's pouring. And in the paddock, Ginger Punch is snoring. Yes, she's as relaxed as can be just 10 minutes before the Grade II Louisville Stakes.
Welcome to the Kentucky Oaks Live Blog!!! Less than four hours to go.
