Proud Spell made it look easy, didn’t she?

The 134th Kentucky Oaks is in the books. Brereton Jones’ filly Proud Spell romped in the mud, much like Rags to Riches last year. Now Larry Jones will try to sweep the Oaks-Derby double with a set of ladies, as Eight Belles goes in the Derby tomorrow.

It was a beautiful day in Louisville until early afternoon when the rain blew in. The crowd at Churchill Downs, primed and ready for a great day of racing and partying just hours before, are now huddled inside. In a little over two hours, the fillies for the 134th Kentucky Oaks will break from the starting gate.

So somehow or other your semi-intrepid bloggist feels the need to fess up, or cop, or subject himself to ridicule in the old Oaks Swan Song. Been good trying to follow these fillies; wish more folks would have come and played.

Here then -- for better or worse -- is one man's opinion on how the nine-panel Kentucky Oaks might unfold Friday at Churchill Downs:

There's a big one to look forward to on Friday afternoon with an intriguing running of the Kentucky Oaks. Eight Belles has drawn the extreme outside post, making it highly likely she'll scratch in favor of facing the boys on Saturday in the Kentucky Derby. Still, any of at least six fillies have a legitimate shot to win this prestigious race. Here's my full analysis and picks:

Only two of the young ladies who will tackle the Kentucky Oaks on Friday have a win over the Churchill Downs dirt. And I will be using both of them in my wagers. In fact, I may use ONLY them.

Going into the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies last year, I really thought A to the Croft was all set to run a huge race and possibly pull the upset. But when she went to the lead I was caught off guard. Perhaps I shouldn't have been, since she had turned in some impressive efforts sprinting beforehand.

So it’s that horse trainer deluxe, one Robert Frankel, on the telly from Kentucky. It is raining – markedly so – in the Blue Grass, but our man from the Hall of Fame in somewhere safe and dry. He is also not in the mood to be verbose, which is the $5 way of saying “go ahead and ask me but let’s keep it short pally.”
