Toby Callet's Florida Oaks Analysis

Saturday, March 17, 2007

The 24th running of The Florida Oaks brings a rather diverse group of eight fillies together to complete for the $120,000 first prize. Here's a brief commentary on each filly.

DINNER BREAK (TALE OF THE CAT): Comes off a smashing victory in The Ocala Breeders' Sale Championship Stakes for three-year-old fillies. Winner on both turf and dirt gets the acid test today.

AUTOBAHN GIRL (A.P. INDY): Crushed her eight rivals in The Suncoast Stakes 4 weeks ago. Homebred filly overcame a slow start in that contest. She's trained well in the interim and should give another good account of herself today. Major player!

SAINT BARBARA (SWEETSOUTHERNSAINT): Locally based filly was all out to hold onto the Show money in The Suncoast Stakes. Lightly raced lass will need to summon more energy in here.

TRAINEE (SILVER CHARM): Homebred filly came up 2nd best when adding blinkers for her toughest test to date last month. She'll have another hurdle to clear this afternoon.

DESIRE TO EXCEL (MT. LIVERMORE): Makes her 2007 debut following an 8-month vacation. Speedy filly has never raced around two turns. Furthermore, her pedigree does not suggest she'll go this far. Should insure an honest pace, if nothing else.

SUAVENESS (SUAVE PROSPECT): This filly has displayed some behavioral problems in the past. She'll need to conserve all her energy to have any hope against these girls.

COTTON BLOSSOM (BROKEN VOW): Comes off the bench following a 19-week hiatus for an outfit that has a phenomenal record with such types. She's trained with the "first team" at Palm Beach Downs and has been carefully pointed to this affair by North America's hottest shedrow!

MARIA'S KITTY (WAVERING MONARCH): Late running lass continues to improve. Calder based filly rates an outside shot of impacting the bottom end of your Trifecta and Superfecta wagers at what should be a very square price.
