Richard, Bertram and Elaine Klein's Get Ready Bertie stamped herself as another filly of Oaks quality with an impressive two-length tally in Saturday's $100,000 Tiffany Lass Stakes for 3-year-old fillies on "Road to the Derby" Kickoff Day at Fair Grounds Race Course.
The last three winners of the Kentucky Oaks have all raced at the preceding Fair Grounds meet, and the Tiffany Lass is the first two-turn prep for the Fair Grounds Oaks run to be run March 10 on Louisiana Derby Day.
Get Ready Bertie's late run covered the one-mile distance n 1:39.52 and the filly returned $5.80 to win.
"Her mother (De Bertie) was a top quality filly," said winning trainer Steve Flint. "I told Robby (Albarado) before the race, ‘She's got a job to do. Let her get it done.'
"She's one of these advancing fillies. Every time we run her, she steps up. She still has a lot to prove, but this was her first step. I think I'll wait and run her next in the (Grade II) Fair Grounds Oaks (March 10). I think I'll give her a little more time."
Longshot Dawn After Dawn held on for second at the wire after dueling for the lead early. Dawn After Dawn nosed out Stage Stop for the place.
Get Ready Bertie, who finished second in the Grade II Demoiselle at Aqueduct in her most recent start, won for the third time in eight career starts and increased her lifetime earnings to more than $162,000.
Albarado's win in the Tiffany Lass was his second stakes win of the day, after he piloted the Roger Smith-owned Smitty's Sunshine to victory in the Dr. A.B. Leggio Memorial Stakes.
The Tiffany Lass and the featured Grade III Lecomte Stakes were two of five $100,000 stakes on the "Road to the Derby" Kickoff Day card.
