Rags to Riches Prohibitive Favorite in Santa Anita Oaks

Sunday, March 11, 2007

Rags to Riches, already a Grade One winner at this track, will look to build on her success in last month’s Las Virgenes when she faces many of the same foes in the Santa Anita Oaks (GI) Sunday.

This race is the last major west coast prep for the Kentucky Oaks, May 4th at Churchill Downs.

In the Santa Anita Oaks, which drew a field of seven, Rags to Riches will once again see Runway Rosie, Cash Included and Baroness Thatcher, all of whom finished behind her in the Las Virgenes.

Baroness Thatcher, second in that race, is also a graded winner at this meet, taking the Santa Ysabel (GIII) in early January.  Among those she beat that day was Mistical Plan, winner of the Fair Grounds Oaks (GII) yesterday.

Runway Rosie has finished behind Baroness Thatcher and Rags to Riches in her last two starts, and will need to find that little extra to get over the hump.

Cash Included didn’t run her best race in the Las Virgenes, but that was her first start since the Breeders’ Cup, and she figures to improve in her second start after the layoff.

Newcomers include Slew o’ Platinum, a minor stakes winner at Turf Paradise; Quickandquietqueen, a maiden winner at Santa Anita; and Silver Swallow, who actually has won two consecutive races, but was disqualified in the first of those two.

The Santa Anita Oaks is race 9 on Sunday’s card, with a scheduled post time of 4:38 PT.
