Mornings on the Backside

From the smell of hay and manure to the sound of iron horse shoes against the concrete, the backside of Churchill Downs track is a special place to be. The sun rises as horses work for their moment of glory on that first Saturday in May.

After each work comes the excitement of getting an up close and personal approach to the Derby contender. How many other sports can you walk into the athlete’s locker room and watch them take a shower? Only on the backside.

“It’s a unique flavor where everyone…trainers, owners, and even the usually grumpy media are lighthearted, excited, and happy to be there,” says Paul Rogers of WHAS-AM. “It is an atmosphere of anticipation and festiveness.”
