Devil House Runs Away with Martha Washington

Sunday, February 18, 2007

Devil House, ridden by Terry Thompson, extended her winning streak to five in a row with a commanding five-length victory in the $50,000 Martha Washington at Oaklawn Park.

The three-year-old daughter of Chester House dispelled doubts about her ability to stretch her speed around two turns, stopping the clock for the one-mile distance in 1:38.83.  Her previous four victories had come at distances of six furlongs of less.  She paid $9.80 as the 4-1 third choice in the field of nine.

Devil House sprung immediately to the lead, opening up a dazzling 3 ½-length lead after a first quarter of :23.08.  She remained firmly in command throughout the race, with Spartan Queen following in second all the way around the oval.  That rival got within a length of the victress on the last turn, but was put away in the stretch as Devil House extended her advantage under mild urging.

Spartan Queen held for second, followed by Time's Mistress, 5/2 race favorite Miss Goodnight, Smart Wildcat, Emma Grace, East Hampton, and Mayomast.   Second-choice Cat On a Cloud was put out of contention early as she lost her rider after stumbling at the start.
