Someone Has To Finish Second, Right?

Thursday, March 15, 2007

I understand that Rags To Riches has already been crowned winner of the Kentucky Oaks (unless of course she runs in the Derby), but there's no reason we can't try to figure out who will complete the exacta on the first Friday in May, is there?

(First, a point of order.  The Kentucky Oaks is only run on the first Friday in May if the Kentucky Derby is NOT run on May 1st.  When that happens, we have to refer to the Oaks as being run on the last Friday in April.  But I digress.)

On Friday at Oaklawn, we get a chance to see if Devil House can extend her winning streak to six as she takes on eight rivals in the Honeybee at 1 1/16 miles.  She got away with mild fractions in her last, and that is unlikely to happen again on Friday.  But she has proven to be one tough cookie, and certainly looks like a legit Oaks threat at this point.  There are a few other girls in here who can establish themselves as such also.  High Heels couldn't close into the soft pace at Fair Grounds last out.  Cat On a Cloud lost the rider against Devil House in her most recent.  Miss Goodnight was actually favored against "Cat" and Devil House last time.

I have to admit that I am pulling for Devil House to win and progress along the Oaks Trail.  Win streaks are always fun.
