Taking Pletcher as an option to Pletcher in the Oaks

Sunday, April 01, 2007

The saying goes , "you need to fight fire with fire". Translate that to horse terms and you need to beat Pletcher with Pletcher. Rags To Riches may end up being the shortest price Oaks favorite in history , but she better look out for one of her sorority sisters as they come to the wire on May 4th. I may be putting the cart before the horse here , but I think Octave should win the Ashland Stakes and go on to the Oaks as perhaps the second choice. She was probably best in the Fair Grounds Oaks but was too far off a fairly easy pace set by Mistical Plan in her first start of the year. She has done several things her stablemate has not; won at Churchill Downs, and shipped and run well. Granted she has not yet won at two turns like Rags to Riches has, but that should get taken care of saturday at Keeneland. I loved the way she closed in the Breeders Cup Juvenile fillies behind once again a fairly soft pace set by Dreaming of Anna. Unless something crazy should happen in the Ashland , I think Octave may get my money on Oaks day to get better value. A Pletcher superfecta; Octave, Rags To Riches, Cotton Blossom and Panty Raid, why not ?
