Girls versus boys. Will there be another Winning Colors anytime soon ?

Friday, February 16, 2007

It is a scientific fact that girls develop at a much faster pace than boys. In elementary and middle school I could outrun and outjump any of the boys on our track team with ease. Billy Jean King was able to defeat Bobby Riggs on the tennis court in the great battle of the sexes, and  before that Babe Didrikson Zaharias regularly beat the guys at various sports. Recently, Annika Sorenstam and Danika Patrick have tried to break the gender barrier in their respective sports though not with complete success at this point. Winning Colors was the last filly to win the Kentucky Derby though several have tried since to no avail. Dreaming of Anna was once considered by her owner as a Derby candidate before her dismal performance last Saturday in her 2007 debut. In analyzing the fillies pointing for this years Kentucky Oaks, so far it seems to be a weak group based on performances to date with one exception. Rags To Riches appears to be something special and is nominated to the Kentucky Derby. Not only does she have the talent, the pedigree and the connections, she is built like a colt much in the mold of Winning Colors. I know it is early in the season and many things can happen and much is left to prove, but if Rags to Riches were in your stable, would you focus strictly on the Oaks, or go for broke and tackle the boys in the Kentucky Derby ?

Rags to Riches has nothing to prove winning the Oaks. They paid 2 million dollars for for her. She already has the pedigree and a Grade 1 victory. I'm not sure if a filly can win the Triple Crown, but why don't some of these owners take a shot at the Preakness, shorter field, maybe after they win the Oaks?
