With all due respect to the Kentucky Oaks, the international interest in that outstanding event is nowhere near the interest in the Kentucky Derby.
It is rather rare that we see an invader from the other side of the pond for the Kentucky Oaks but if there is such a runner, my job will be to keep you updated on who they are. Maybe, just maybe there is a talented three-year-old filly in Dubai that could emerge as an Oaks candidate.
Regarding the favorite in the initial Kentucky Oaks Future Wager, B.C. Juvenile Fillies winner Dreaming of Anna, yours truly is rather curious to see how her 2007 campaign is mapped out. Becuase of her ability on grass, there are a large number of options/directions that she can be taken.
There have been quotes from her handlers which state they believe that Dreaming of Anna is better on turf than on dirt. But in the U.S., there are no early-season grass races for her age group really worth shooting for. So, it could be that Dreaming of Anna is aimed at a dirt race on the 1st weekend of May at Churchill Downs and then is moved to the turf for the balance of the season. By the way, her owner still has wild Kentucky Derby dreams.
Being in England these days, I think it would be rather cool if she attempted to come over here for Group 1 Classics such as the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket over a mile. There are some great races in Europe that should be supported by top American horses as we continue to see the racing world getting more and more international with each passing year.
Dreaming of Anna, one way or another, is going to be a very interesting horse to watch this year.
Cheers from London for now....
