Robert and Beverly Lewis’s 2-year-old filly champion Folklore emerged as a narrow favorite following the first of four days of betting in Pool 1 of Churchill Downs’ 2006 Kentucky Oaks Future Wager (“KOFW”).

The daughter of Tiznow, the winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (Grade I) at Belmont Park for Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, was the 4-1 Oaks Future choice despite an upset loss in her 3-year-old debut in the Santa Ynez (GII) at Santa Anita. The champion narrowly edged the mutuel field, which includes all 3-year-old fillies other than the 23 horses listed among the pool’s individual wagering interests. The “all others” wager, the 4-1 favorite in handicapper Mike Battaglia’s morning line odds for the pool, was a close second choice on Thursday at odds of 9-2.

Golden Rod (GII) winner French Park stood as the 8-1 third choice in Pool 1’s first day of betting. Del Mar Debutante (GI) winner Wild Fit next at 10-1, and was followed by Hollywood Starlet (GI) winner Diplomat Lady (13-1) and the stakes-placed Sabatini (15-1). Wagering on the opening day of KOFW Pool 1 totaled $3,436. Betting in the pool will resume at noon (all times Eastern) on Friday, Jan. 27.

The Kentucky Oaks Future Wager offers racing fans the opportunity to wager on Oaks contenders well in advance of the $500,000-added race for 3-year-old fillies at odds that could be more attractive than they would receive on Oaks Day. It is a minimum $2 wager and a win bet only. There are no refunds in the Kentucky Oaks Future Wager.

Winning payouts in all Kentucky Oaks Future Wager pools are based on the odds that are in place at the conclusion of each respective pool. Betting on Pool 1 will continue through 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29. KOFW Pool 2 is scheduled for March 2-5 and the third and final pool is set for April 6-9. The 132nd running of the Kentucky Oaks is scheduled for Friday, May 6 at Churchill Downs.
