A native and life-long resident of New York, Jerkens, 76, has been a long-standing and legendary figure in the Sport of Kings on the New York circuit. Dubbed the "Giant Killer" for defeating such champions as Kelso, Buckpasser, Secretariat, Riva Ridge and Forego with horses he conditioned, Jerkens has trained more than 200 stakes winners in more than a half century of work, which includes a long list of graded stakes winners and a champion - Sky Beauty - who swept the Triple Tiara series for 3-year-old fillies in New York in 1993 and was the top older filly and mare in 1994. Jerkens, who is also known by many in the racing circles as "The Chief", captured the Eclipse award as the top trainer in 1973, and in 1975, he became the youngest trainer to be inducted to the Horse Racing Hall of Fame. He has saddled three starters in the Kentucky Derby, with his best finish coming in the form of a sixth-place run in 1978 with Sensitive Prince. His son Jimmy is also a popular trainer on the New York circuit. |
A native of Panama, Velasquez first established himself as an apprentice by leading his country in 1985. He then won the leading rider title in Panama as a journeyman in 1994 and again in '95. After a 14-year career in his native country, he came to the Uinted States and launched successful campaigns in California and New York before basing himself at Calder Race Course in South Florida. In 2002, he swept the leading riding honors at Calder, winning both the regular season and Tropical titles, in addition to riding regularly at Churchill Downs. His biggest victory since his arrival in the U.S. came aboard Cajun Beat in the 2003 Gr. I Breeders' Cup Sprint. He has won over 2,000 races in his career and has had a pair of mounts in the Kentucky Derby. His best finish in the Run for the Roses came a year ago in 2005 when he nearly pulled off a huge upset aboard 72-1 shot Closing Argument before being nipped by fellow longshot Giacomo in the late stages, settling for second. |

Pedigrees simply do not get much better than the one Teammate has. Her sire, A.P. Indy, was a top performer as a racehorse, taking 3-year-old Champion honors and Horse of the Year honors in 1992, and he is perennially a top stallion with a stellar pedigree himself for producing top class horses at the Classic distance, being by the legendary Seattle Slew. Standing at the elite stud fee level of $300,000 live foal at Lane's End Farm, A.P. Indy has produced three champions in America and he already has a Kentucky Oaks winner in Secret Status (2000).
Teammate's dam, Starry Dreamer, won multiple stakes events on the grass in the late 90's and was versatile enough to place in the Gr. I Gazelle Handicap against top dirt fillies. A gray mare, Starry Dreamer, the impressive producer of three stakes winners from three foals to race, is by the gray champion sprinter Rubiano, and those genes were passed down to Teammate - a filly with the same tone of coat as her dam and dam sire. The other stakes winning siblings are Ecclesiastic, graded winner on the turf, and War Front, a top sprinter on the dirt in early 2006.
Teammate's third dam is by the stamina influence Round Table, making her 4x5 to that stallion through the Seattle Slew paternal line. She is also 5x5x6 to the important sire Princequillo.
Teammate displayed her quality and ability to handle a route of ground when she cruised to an impressive victory in the Gr. II Bonnie Miss at Gulfstream Park in March at the 1 1/8-mile distance of the Kentucky Oaks, which earned her a gaudy Beyer speed figure of 100.
