A native of Chula Vista, Calif., Hess is the son of trainer Bob Hess, Sr., who maintains a string on the Northern California circuit. The younger Hess became his father's assistant in 1983 and notched his first winner four years later at Del Mar. He played one year of college baseball at Stanford University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics, with future major leaguers Jack McDowell and Mike Aldrete. He has won training titles at Hollywood Park and Del Mar and has conditioned the stakes winners D'Wildcat, River Special, Wekiva Springs and Blueprint. His first Grade I win came with River Special in the 1992 Del Mar Futurity. |
Desormeaux, a native of Maurice, La., began riding in 1986 at Evangeline Downs; a year later he moved from Louisiana to Maryland. There, he led the nation's apprentices in victories in 1987, but his 450 wins led all jockeys. In 1989, Desormeaux blitzed the record for victories in a year by riding to the winner's circle 598 times, breaking Chris McCarron's 1974 mark of 546. He shifted his tack to Southern California in 1990 and has won Eclipse Awards in 1987, 1989 and 1992 in addition to the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award in 1993. He has won riding titles at all of the southern California tracks as well as Laurel, Pimlico, and in Tokyo, Japan. The close of 2004 saw Desormeaux ranked 15th nationally in purses won, earning over $8.7 million, with some of his top horses being Musical Chimes, Ticker Tape, Island Fashion, and Domestic Dispute. He teamed up with Drysdale to win the 2000 Kentucky Derby aboard Fusaichi Pegasus; also won the 1998 Derby aboard Real Quiet. He is still looking for his first Kentucky Oaks win. He and his wife, Sonia, have two sons, Joshua and Jacob. |

Quiet Kim is a daughter of 1998 champion 3-year-old Real Quiet, winner of the Kentucky Derby (GI) and Preakness Stakes (GI) that year and fell a nose short from capturing the Triple Crown in the Belmont Stakes (GI). Real Quiet was a blue-collar horse having only brought $17,000 as a yearling. Real Quiet was a Gr. I winner at two before his fabulous run as a 3-year-old, and he finished his stellar career at four with wins against older horses in the Gr. I Hollywood Gold Cup and Gr. I Pimlico Special. A son of stamina-influence sire Quiet American, Real Quiet captured all six of his career wins at 1 1/16 miles or longer. Real Quiet, career winner of more than $3.2 million, was purchased by Wonder Lady Anne L's breeder George Hofmeister of Highland Farms after the horse's racing career and currently stands at Taylor Made Farm in Kentucky for a fee of $10,000. He is also the sire of Kentucky Oaks contender Wonder Lady Anne L.
Quiet Kim is the lone winner (of two foals) from her dam Miss Alydeed. Miss Alydeed is out of the stakes placed mare Filet, a half-sister to the Gr. III winner Fighting Fantasy, a horse with the dubious distinction of finishing last in the Kentucky Derby, in 1990. Filet is closely related to the top-class sprinter Snow Ridge, a Gr. I winner of over $700K. Quiet Kim is also related to top Kentucky Derby contender Sweetnorthernsaint. Quiet Kim's third dam, Ice Fantasy, is the mother of Ice Beauty, the dam of Sweetnorthernsaint. Ice Beauty herself is a half-sister to Dial a Trick, dam of 2003 Kentucky Derby fifth-place finisher Eye of the Tiger.

QUIET KIM flopped in her final Oaks prep - Oaklawn Park's Fantasy - but she was really on a roll coming into that one and has quietly developed into one of the better sophomore fillies in Southern California with solid work by trainer Bob Hess, Jr. Really outran her odds when second at 27-1 in the Santa Anita Oaks and that's really the only time she has proven she can run with this kind. However, in a fairly light running of the Oaks by talent standards, she does fit okay with her best try and we may not have seen it yet. Certainly got all the bounce, regression, whatever you want to call it out in that horrid wide trip in Hot Springs. Likely to revert to the higher end of the tote board off that poor race and it probably isn't her. Very interesting filly to use in exotics at a price but she's not the kind you are going to bet to win with a lot of confidence. Career best hits the board and she may have it in the tank.
