A southern California native, Karin is the private trainer for Norman, a job she took in December, 2005. Prior to that, she worked at Creston Farms in Paso Robles, California. Owned by Alex Trebek of Jeopardy fame, Creston focuses on breaking and boarding young horses. Long actually broke Miss Norman at Creston. She currently has six horses in training at Hollywood Park. Before becoming involved in horseracing, Long was a substitute teacher and graphic designer. She will be making her first trip to Kentucky in this year's Oaks. |
Pablo Morales is as young as they come in the professional jockey circles, as the Peru native is set to ride in the biggest race in the world for 3-year-old fillies at the youthful age of 18. Morales' biggest win to date happened to also be his first victory in North American, when he teamed up with Norman to capture the $750,000 Grade II Super Derby at Louisiana Downs last October. |
Norman, a native of San Diego, has been a fan of racing since childhood, when his father took him to the races at Del Mar and Agua Caliente. A graduate of UCLA, he entered the construction management business in 1986 with his brother. The company oversees the building of schools in several southern California districts. Norman has been involved in the racing game as an owner since 1995, when he bought his first horse. After having several trainers over the next nine years, he became his own stable manager in 2004. He focuses on buying young horses for the direct purpose of racing. He won the 2005 Super Derby (GII) at Louisiana Downs with The Daddy. He has never had a Kentucky Oaks starter. |

Miss Norman is a daughter of the 1999 Eclipse champion sprinter and Breeders' Cup Sprint (GI) winner Artax. The fastest horse of his generation, he equaled or set four track records. His brilliant speed could well come from his dam's side; his second dam is by the super-fast Hall of Famer Dr. Fager. Artax did break his maiden going long at age two and was on the Derby trail on the California circuit the following year, but a third in the Santa Anita Derby (GI) ended those plans. Artax is a footnote in Preakness Day history - in a race on the Preakness undercard, a fan ran from the infield onto the homestretch and tried unsuccessfully to punch his jockey Jorge Chavez. Miraculously, no one was injured in the bizarre incident. With four crops of racing age, he has two stakes winners: Friendly Michelle, a winner of the Prioress (GII) and La Troienne (GIII) and the listed winner R Fast Lady.
Cajun Cat, dam of Miss Norman, has had five foals to race, with four of those being winners, and our subject filly the most accomplished of the lot. Cajun Cat was unplaced in her career; she is out of the unraced Desireux, a half-sister to champion sprinter Housebuster and the grade two winning turf mare Quero Quero.
Miss Norman is inbred to two of the most influential stallions in the latter half of the 20th century: Mr. Prospector (4x4) and Northern Dancer (5x4). In addition, she also has the aforementioned Dr. Fager (4x5) on both sides of her pedigree. The typical speed influences are somewhat balanced by the presence of the stayer Round Table on her sire's side and Secretariat on her dam's side.

MISS NORMAN ran an incredible race last out in her seasonal debut, bolting twice in the stretch before reengaging to be a game second at 41-1 despite losing immense ground in that highly publicized renewal of the Fantasy. She appeared to be much the best that day, and without her antics, it is conceivable to assume that she could have won impressively and earned a solid speed figure in the process. Obviously, that scenario would have had her at a much shorter morning line price than her 20-1 in the Oaks. While the filly has looked visually impressive training in the mornings at Churchill Downs, there have been several changes noticed in her training regiment that should be a cause for concern to any handicapper, as she has unexpectedly changed riders late, inconsistently trained with multiple types of equipment, and had an obscure training schedule - to name a few. Now, after taking into account that she unluckily drew the rail after her owner publicly stated that the Artax filly needed clear sailing on the outside, she becomes even more unattractive as a wagering proposition in the Oaks. Miss Norman has shown that she belongs from a talent standpoint, but considering what she'll have to overcome to win the 132nd Kentucky Oaks, she is clearly a bet-against in this particular race. Passing.
