Dutrow, 47, comes from a family of trainers: his late father, Dick Sr., was a leading conditioner on the East Coast and his brother Tony is based in Maryland. He began working for his father at age 16. He has been the leading trainer at both Aqueduct and Belmont Park, and was the top trainer in New York in 2001 and 2002 in terms of wins. He was based in both Maryland and New York for over 15 years, but now splits time between New York and Palm Meadows in Florida. Dutrow enjoyed his best year as a trainer in 2005, having campaigned Gr. I winner Sis City, the favorite in the 2005 Kentucky Oaks, and a pair of Breeders' Cup winners in '05 Sprint winner Silver Train and '05 Classic winner Saint Liam. Saint Liam went on to capture Horse of the Year honors in 2005 for Dutrow. Other top horses he's conditioned over the years include graded stakes winners Carson Hollow, Offlee Wild, Well Fancied and Love of Money. In 2005, he finished 15th nationally with 151 wins and won at an outstanding 26% clip for the year. His earnings were flattered by having top horses in the barn, and he closed out the year ranked fourth nationally after his horses bankrolled $9,797,126. |
Bejarano, born June 23, 1982, in Peru, currently lives in Louisville. He went to the races as child in his home country, eventually attending that nation's riding school. Began riding in Peru in 1999, winning an apprentice title the same year. Came to the United States in May of 2002, beginning his U.S. riding career at River Downs in Cincinnati. While it took him about five months to win his first race, he's been a top rider on the Kentucky circuit ever since. He won the Churchill Downs 2004 Spring Meet title, as well as winning titles at Turfway Park and Ellis Park. He capped his success in 2004, when he led the nation in wins with 455, 72 more than his closest pursuer. He currently is riding in New York and on the Kentucky circuit. 2005 was another banner year for the young Peruvian; he finished fourth nationally in earnings, with $14.4 million, capped by a victory in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf (GI) aboard Intercontinental. Bejarano rode his first Derby last year, finishing eighth aboard Andromeda's Hero. |
Sanford Goldfarb, a commodities trader on the New York Merchantile Exchange, was born in New York on Feb. 24, 1958. Goldfarb has attended the races since he was a teenager, and has owned standardbred horses for approximately 25 years and thoroughbreds for nearly a decade. He was the leeading owner in New York from 2001-2003 with 136 wins. Goldfarb's racing stable includes approximately 65 horses, including about eight broodmares. New York is home base, but his stable runs at Gulfstream and Churchill Downs in the winter and spring. He was part of the partnership that owned 2005 Oaks participant Sis City. |

Last Romance is by graded stakes winner Wild Rush, who was sold to Japanese interests a few years ago after initially standing at Frank Stronach's Adena Springs. By Wild Again, Wild Rush, who raced for Stronach, was a solid performer over a route of ground, and his biggest career victory came in the Gr. II Kentucky Cup Classic at Turfway when he dead-heated with champion Silver Charm. He currently stands at Arrow Stud in Japan for 4,000,000 Yen, and the majority of his limited North American starters have enjoyed success around two turns.
Fond Romance, Last Romance's dam and namesake, wasn't an overwhelmingly productive race mare, having only earned $78,760 on the track with no stakes placings, but she is by an extremely solid stamina and quality influence in Fappiano. Aside from that, she is out of a stakes winning Raja Baba mare, and she has proven to be a useful producer, getting six winners from as many starters. However, she has yet to produce any stakes performers outside of Last Romance.
It is difficult to gauge whether or not she is bred to handle the nine panels of the Oaks distance, as she may prefer just shorter than that based on her pedigree and past performances. But, Wild Rush and Fappiano certainly are identifiable with router pedigrees, so don't be discouraged if you like what you see in this filly. One major thing to note that sticks out about her family is that she should relish an off track if it were to rain for the Oaks.
Interestingly, she is 4x5 to the broodmare Missy Baba, the dam of Raja Baba.

LAST ROMANCE has never beaten this kind but she is on the improve and might have the needed forward move in the tank to compete with these top fillies. Daughter of WIld Rush will get stamina from her Fappiano mare and she's a lot like Oaks 131 favorite Sis City who was also claimed from Steve Asmussen very early on. Blossomed into a solid stakes miler for white hot trainer Dick Dutrow, who rolled through the Breeders' Cup last year with Silver Train and eventual champion Saint Liam. He's a very sharp trainer and has decided to run two in this event after this miss won by daylight in Aqueduct's listed Wayward Lass. Top local rider Rafeal Bejarano jumps aboard and should get her a garden trip in between the speed and the closers. Her recent '9' on the Ragozin Sheets fits well with the more established runners and she is likely to 'pair up' or even exceed that number as a young and progressive filly. Plenty to like here and she won't be overbet with fairly light credentials. Has the talent and connections to make the step up and factor at double digit odds. Very interesting for gimmicks and even straight wagers.
