Diplomat Lady is a grand looking daughter of Forestry and she possesses many of that stallion's attractive physical features. Forestry has all the tools to be one of the next great sires to make an impact on the breed, as he possesses the looks, world class pedigree, racing credentials, and early stallion production. A Grade I winner on the track, Forestry was so fast that he went favored in the Gr. I Breeders' Cup Sprint in his final start in 1999 as a 3-year-old, yet he could carry his brilliance around two turns by evidence of his astonishing victory over top sophomores in the Gr. II Dwyer. Diplomat Lady has shown eerily similar form, having captured a Grade I at 1 1/16 miles in her final start at two and turning back to effectively win the seven furlong Gr. II Beaumont in impressive fashion in her most recent start.
Standing in 2006 for a $100,000 stud fee, Forestry has a lovely pedigree, being by top modern day stallion Storm Cat out of multiple Grade I winner Shared Interest. He is a half brother to Breeders' Cup winner Cash Run and has been well received in the breeding shed. The majority of his progeny have been sprinters, such as graded stakes winners Forest Danger, Teton Forest and Smokey Glacken, but he has produced a few solid performers with the ability to get a route of ground, including Congressionalhonor, Old Forester and Reforest. Forestry may be most renowned at this point for siring The Green Monkey - the $16 million 2-year-old-in-training purchase in early 2006.
Playcaller, Diplomat Lady's dam, was a very solid performer on the track, having captured the prestigious Davona Dale Stakes and Tiffany Lass Stakes - 2-of-3 former premier events for 3-year-old fillies at Fair Grounds. Although she has produced six winners from six starters in her second career as a broodmare, Playcaller had been disappointing until dropping Diplomat Lady - which has by far been her best offspring.
While Playcaller is directly bred to handle a route of ground (Saratoga Six out of a What a Pleasure mare) and has enjoyed some success around two turns, she does have the likes of top sprinters such as Beau's Town in her family. So with Forestry, who didn't win beyond 1 1/16 miles, as Diplomat Lady's sire, the 1 1/8-mile distance of the Oaks may prove to be a stretch for Diplomat Lady. Interestingly enough, she is 4x5x5x5 to stamina influence Bold Ruler, but her dosage index suggests she may be best at middle distances.

DIPLOMAT LADY won the Gr. I Hollywood Starlet over Oaks favorite Balance in her first two-turn attempt last winter at Hollywood Park, which led many to believe that the daughter of Forestry may relish route of ground. However, she loped on an easy lead that day and had enough left late to turn back Balance. Diplomat Lady turned in a pair of disappointing efforts in her next pair if starts in the Gr. I Las Virgenes and Gr. I Santa Anita Oaks, where she was involved in the early pace before fading in both affairs. She turned back to seven furlongs last out and impressively captured the Gr. II Beaumont over a solid field at Keeneland, and judging by her looks and pedigree, 7 - 8 1/2 panels may be her ideal distance. While she has looked in good in the flesh all week preparing for the Oaks, her last breeze on Monday was visually a very discouraging effort, as she bobbled a few times when set down and never really looked comfortable. Several of these have already defeated her in recent starts over a route of ground, and judging by the likely hot pace in the Oaks, this speedster figures to get an unfavorable trip. She is a very talented filly and should have a stellar career around one turn down the road. But, doubts of her ability to excel at the Oaks distance with the undesirable journey she figures to get, Diplomat Lady should not be taken seriously for anything other than as a pace factor. Looking elsewhere.
