Soaring Sis City Is Strong Favorite In Final Oaks Future Pool

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (April 10, 2005) - A 10 ½-length romp in Saturday's Ashland Stakes (Grade I) at Keeneland prompted racing fans across North America to make the speedy Sis City a strong 5-2 favorite to win the $500,000-added Kentucky Oaks (GI) after four days of betting in the third and final pool of Churchill Downs' 2005 Kentucky Oaks Future Wager ("KOFW") drew to a close on Sunday evening.

Three consecutive stakes victories by Sis City - with the last two coming by a combined margin of 26 ½-lengths - and misfortune for morning line favorite Sweet Catomine, who is likely out of the Kentucky Oaks after a disappointing effort against males in the Santa Anita Derby (GI), combined to make the daughter of Slew City Slew the fans' choice in Pool 3. Sis City stood as an 18-1 outsider at the midpoint of the four-day pool, but odds on the filly plummeted after she ran away from an elite field in the Ashland that included KOFW Pool 3 betting interests Runway Model (8-1), Summerly (13-1), Letgomyecho (30-1), Memorette (38-1) and Amazing Buy (74-1).

Despite her disappointing loss in the Santa Anita Derby and comments by owner Martin Wygod that indicated that his filly was unlikely to run in the Kentucky Oaks, Sweet Catomine still closed as the 6-1 second choice in Pool 3. Sharp Lisa, who was scratched from the Ashland after she suffered a bruised foot, finished the pool at 11-1. The mutuel field, which includes all 3-year-old fillies other than the 23 individual betting interests in Pool 3, also closed at odds of 11-1.

Sis City was claimed by trainer Richard Dutrow, Jr. for $50,000 last August at Saratoga and is now owned by a partnership that includes Stonerside Stable, Sanford Goldfarb, New York Yankees manager Joe Torre, Michael Dubb and Ira Davis. Her margin of victory was the second largest in the 68-year history of the mile and a sixteenth Ashland. Other fillies that attracted solid support in the year's final KOFW included unbeaten Yankee Penny, who will run in Friday's $250,000 Fantasy Stakes (GII) at Oaklawn Park, and Bourbonette Breeders' Cup winner Dance Away Capote, who is also being considered for the Fantasy and closed at odds of 18-1 in Pool 3.

Kentucky Oaks fans wagered $49,445 in KOFW Pool 3 to push total wagering in this year's three pools to $172,479. The total reflects a nine percent increase over the three-pool total of $158,211 in 2004, the first year that the Oaks Future Bet adopted the three-pool format.

The Kentucky Oaks Future Wager is a minimum $2 wager and a win bet only. It offers racing fans the opportunity to bet on Kentucky Oaks contenders at odds that could be greater than those they would receive on the day of the race. There are no refunds in the Kentucky Oaks Future Wager.

Winning payouts in all Kentucky Oaks Future Wager pools are based on the odds that are in place on each wagering interest at the conclusive of each respective pool The $500,000-added Kentucky Oaks, a mile and an eighth race for 3-year-old fillies, will be run for the 131st consecutive year on Friday, May 6. Information on the Kentucky Oaks is available at the event's official Web site at www.kentuckyoaks.com.
