Kentucky Oaks Contenders Madcap Escapade, Last Song Work Half-Miles
By: Oaks Notes Team

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (April 15, 2004) - Bruce Lunsford's Madcap Escapade and Buckram Oak Farm's Last Song, two candidates for the $500,000-added Kentucky Oaks (Grade I) on April 30, worked out over the Churchill Downs surface on Thursday.

Madcap Escapade and Last Song each worked a half-mile, with the former zipping over the track in :46 and the latter breezing in :49.20.

The work by the Frank Brothers-trained Madcap Escapade, who was ridden by apprentice rider Pedro Velez, was the fastest of 63 moves at the distance. Her time over a "fast" track also a full second faster than any other workout at the four-furlong distance and was her second straight "bullet" work since she arrived at Churchill Downs in late March.

"She went nice," Brothers said. "She is doing well and I am pleased with her."

Madcap Escapade is unbeaten in four starts, which includes a half-length victory in Keeneland's Ashland Stakes (GI) in her most recent outing. The daughter of Hennessy has won those races by a combined margin of 27 lengths.

The Carl Nafzger-trained Last Song, third to Madcap Escapade in the Ashland last time out, won Gulfstream Park's Bonnie Miss (GII) in March. The daughter of Unbridled's Song has won three of eight races with career earnings of $238,330.

WORK TAB (Track: FAST) - 2002 Golden Rod (GII) and 2003 Stonerside Beaumont (GIII) winner My Boston Gal, unraced since the 2003 Kentucky Oaks, worked five furlongs in 1:01.60 for trainer Carl Nafzger...Trainer Greg Foley worked two of his stakes winners as Champali, winner of the 2003 Northern Dancer and runner-up in the Derby Trial (GIII), and Golden Marlin, winner of the 2003 Dogwood (2003). Each worked five-eighths in :59.80, which tied as the fastest works among 45 at the distance ...Lead Story, winner of last fall's Churchill Downs Distaff (GII) and Falls City (GII), breezed three furlongs in :35.20 for Nafzger. Her move was the second-fastest of 13 at the distance ...Belmont Breeders' Cup (GII) winner Della Francesca breezed three furlongs in :37 ...Fayette (GIII) winner M B Sea worked a half-mile in :50.
