Last Song A Winning Tune In Bonnie Miss
By: Mark Hoard

(March 6, 2004) - Last Song made up for a tough defeat in the February 7 Davona Dale (GII) by taking Saturday's $200,000 Bonnie Miss Stakes (GII) at Gulfstream Park. The two-length win was a sweet victory after the loss in the Davona Dale, where she finished fourth, but beaten just a half length.

In a field of just five, Last Song went off the 3-1 second choice behind the 1-2 favorite; the Allen Jerkens trained Society Selection, who had finished third in the Davona Dale. Last Song broke last from her outside post position, but moved up under jockey Edgar Prado to join the leader Society Selection after about 1/2 mile. Rare Gift, with Pat Day up, was just another head back in third. As the trio made there way around the far turn, Rare Gift began to fade and Last Song moved to take a short lead over Society Selection. Jerry Bailey, aboard Jerkens' filly, went to the whip at the top of the stretch while Prado was still hand riding Last Song. The eventual winner began to edge away in the final furlong as Society Selection grudgingly gave way. Last Song crossed the wire two lengths in front, while Society Selection was 4 3/4 lengths ahead of third place finisher Rare Gift. Marina de Chavon and Journey Fever completed the order of finish.

Last Song, trained by Carl Nafzger, finished the 1 1/8 miles in 1:50.60. She earned $120,000 for her owner Buckram Oak Farm, who also own leading Derby contender Eurosilver. Last Song's race record now stands at 3-1-0 from seven starts. The winner paid $8.20, $2.60, and $2.10. Society Selection's place was $2.20 and $2.10. Rare Gift paid $2.10 to show. The $2 exacta with the two favorites was $12.60.
