VICTORY U.S.A. - Thomas A. Van Meter II's daughter of 1998 Belmont Stakes winner and '99 champion older horse Victory Gallop had run well against some of the top members of her generation, but earned her spot in the Kentucky Oaks starting gate with a romp in the Stonerside Beaumont (GII) at Keeneland on April 8. She roared to an 8 ½-length victory over reigning 2-year-old filly champion Halfbridled in the most impressive performance of her career. Victory U.S.A. is trained by Bob Baffert, a three-time winner of the Kentucky Derby who took the Kentucky Oaks in 1999 with Mike Pegram's two-time champion Silverbulletday. Van Meter won a pair of stakes races at Churchill Downs in 2003 with the retired Be Gentle, while jockey Pat Day will be seeking his third success in the Kentucky Oaks. Day, Churchill Downs' all-time leading rider and a member of racing's Hall of Fame, piloted Secret Status (2000) and Goodbye Halo (1988) to wins in the Derby for Fillies. |

Victory U.S.A. is by Victory Gallop, who was champion older male in the United States in 1999. He was a very consistent racehorse, finishing with a record of 9-5-1 from 17 lifetime starts, 13 of them in stakes, while earning over $3.5 million. His wins included the Belmont Stakes (G1), where he denied Real Quiet the Triple Crown, the Whitney Handicap (G1), and the Stephen Foster (G2), when he set a new track record of 1:47.28 for the 1 1/8 miles. Victory U.S.A. is from Victory Gallop’s first crop of racing age, so it is too early to tell how his offspring will perform as they stretch out in distance. However, being by Cryptoclearance, who was a distance-loving runner himself, there should be plenty of stamina in his offspring. Victory U.S.A. is the first of two foals out of her dam Fordyce, and is the only one to race. Fordyce won only one sprint race, but she placed in nine others. She is out of the outstanding race mare Foresta, who set two track records, won eleven races and over $600,000; with wins in the All Along Stakes (G2), the New York Handicap (G2), the Diana Handicap (G2), and the Capital Holding Mile Stakes (at Churchill Downs).
