SILENT SIGHS - Mr. and Mrs. Martin Wygod's homebred daughter of Benchmark stunned the racing world with an upset of previously unbeaten champion Halfbridled in the Santa Anita Oaks (GI). That March 13 triumph was the most recent start for the California-bred filly trained by Julio Canani, a veteran of the Southern California circuit who is seeking his first Kentucky Oaks victory. Silent Sighs has won four of five career races, with her only setback being a narrow loss to Kentucky Oaks rival House of Fortune in last year's California Cup Juvenile Fillies. Jockey David Flores, who won the 1998 Kentucky Oaks aboard John A. Chandler's Keeper Hill, has ridden Silent Sighs in each of her races. She has earned $442,700. |

Silent Sighs is by second year crop sire Benchmark, who got a late start in his racing career, making only one start at age three. He was lightly raced for a horse that was still running at age seven, finishing with a 7-2-4 mark from 16 starts. His stakes all came at age six, when he took the Goodwood Breeders’ Cup (G2), the Del Mar Breeders’ Cup (G2), and the San Bernadino Handicap (G2). He is a half-brother to Tranquility Lake, multiple grade one winner of eleven races and over $1.6 million. He has sired five stakes winners to date, most notably Golden Gate Derby (G3) winner Standard Setter. Silent Sighs is the first of two foals to race from her dam Quiet Romance. Quiet Romance was also unraced. She is a half sister to Mirabilia, who finished second in the restricted Time To Leave Handicap. Silent Sigh’s second dam, Brisa De Mar, was stakes placed several times, mainly in restricted and overnight events. Quiet Romance is a daughter of Bertrando, a California stallion who was champion older male in 1993. Bertrando set a track record winning the Pacific Classic (GI) that year, getting the 1 1/4 miles in 1:59.40. He would have been one of the favorites for the 1992 Derby, but missed the race due to injury.
