MADCAP ESCAPADE - Unbeaten Madcap Escapade earned the role of favorite for the 130th Kentucky Oaks with a half-length victory over Oaks rival Ashado in the Ashland (GI) at Keeneland. The victory was the fourth in a brief career that was launched with a 10-length romp at Gulfstream Park in early January. The daughter of Hennessy is owned by Bruce Lunsford, a former candidate for governor of Kentucky and successful Louisville business owner, and trained by Frank Brothers. Both Lunsford and Brothers are seeking their first victories in the Kentucky Oaks, but Hall of Fame jockey Jerry Bailey is seeking his third Oaks win. His previous success came aboard Ogden Mills Phipps' Dispute in 1993 and Juddmonte Farm's Flute in 2001. Madcap Escapade has earned $479,200. "Madcap Escapade is by the young Storm Cat sire Hennessy. Hennessy was a precocious colt that won the Hopeful Stakes (GI) at Saratoga as a juvenile. From three crops to date Hennessy has sired 31 stakes winners, including Johannesburg, 2001 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (GI) winner and champion two year old in the United States, Ireland, France, and England; Harmony Lodge, winner of the Ballerina (GI); Distilled, winner of the Illinois Derby (GII); Coolmore Lexington Stakes (GII) winner Keats; and Palm Beach Stakes (GIIIT) winner Orchard Park. Hennessy is a son of the legendary sire Storm Cat, who has over 100 stakes winners to his credit, including 1994 Kentucky Oaks (GI) winner Sardula. Hennessy raced only one year, his two-year-old season, when also took the Sapling (GII) and the Hollywood Juvenile (GII). Madcap Escapade is the second foal out of her dam Sassy Pants; the other being unraced. Sassy Pants had eight wins from 22 lifetime starts, all in Illinois. She was named three-year-old champion filly of that state in 1995. She is also a half sister to three other stakes-placed performers, including Apalachee Special, a dirt route specialist who took the Sportsman's Park Breeders' Cup Handicap.
