LAST SONG - Buckram Oak Farm's daughter of Unbridled's Song was a late running third to Kentucky Oaks rivals Madcap Escapade and Ashado in the Ashland (GI) at Keeneland, but she had earned her ticket to the Oaks with a dominating win over heavily favored Society Selection in the Bonnie Miss (GII) at Gulfstream Park. Last Song took four races to score her first victory for trainer Carl Nafzger, but that success came in her only start at Churchill Downs last fall. Nafzger, who won the 1990 Kentucky Derby with Unbridled, has not won the Oaks - but he finished second in 1998 with Banshee Breeze, who would go on to earn an Eclipse Award that year as America's top 3-year-old filly. Buckram Oak, owned by Monsour Fustok, is seeking its first Oaks win, but jockey Edgar Prado is looking for his second consecutive win after piloting Marylou Whitney's Bird Town victory one year ago. She has a career record of 3-1-1 in eight races with earnings of $238,330. Last Song is by Unbridled’s Song, who sold at auction for $1.4 million as a two year old, and then won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in 1995. He sired two Grade one winners in his first crop: Breeders’ Cup Distaff (GI) winner Unbridled Elaine and Fountain of Youth Stakes (GI) winner Songandaprayer. From four crops to race, he has nineteen stakes winners, including Buddha, winner of the Wood Memorial (GI); Marylebone, winner of the Matron Stakes (GI); Domestic Dispute, winner of the Santa Catalina (GII); and leading 2004 Derby contender Eurosilver. Unbridled’s Song showed flashes of brilliance on the racetrack, winning the Breeder Cup Juvenile in only his third start and taking the Florida Derby (GI) by 5 ¾ lengths, defeating Horse of the Year Skip Away, and classic winners Louis Quatorze and Editor’s Note. Last Song is out of Queen of Spirit, who was winless in seven starts, mainly on the fair circuit in California. She has had three foals to race prior to Last Song. All were winners, but not in stakes competition. Queen of Spirit is a half-sister to the multiple grade one winning filly Tactile, who took the Beldame and Gazelle at age three. Her dam, Only Queens, was a stakes winner at two, winning the Demoiselle (GI) and the Tempted (GII). Last Song's broodmare sire Deputy Minister was the second-leading 2003 broodmare sire with 23 stakes winners of more than $13.9 million, including 2003 Breeders' Cup winner Halfbridled and Strong Hope, winner of the Jim Dandy (GI) at Saratoga. Dosage Index: 1.67
