ISLAND SAND - B.A. Man, Inc.'s daughter of Tabasco Cat earned her ticket to the Kentucky Oaks with a runner-up finish in the Fantasy (GII) at Oaklawn Park. Trained by Kentucky-based J. Larry Jones, who stables through most of the year at Ellis Park, Island Sand has fashioned a strong record of 3-2-0 in five races with earnings of $137,605. The Fantasy was her first race for her owner and trainer, as she was purchased after a victory in the Busanda Stakes at Aqueduct in late January. Terry Thompson will ride Island Sand in the Kentucky Oaks and a victory would be the first in the race for her owner, trainer and jockey. |

Island Sand is by Tabasco Cat who was 8-3-2 in 18 starts, earning $2,347,671. His victories included the 1994 Preakness (G1) and Belmont (G1) Stakes. Retired to Overbrook, where he was bred, at the end of his racing campaign, he was sold to Japanese interests in 2000. Tragically, he passed away on March 25 of this year, suffering a heart attack shortly after covering a mare. The sire of 21 stakes winners and 17 stakes-placed runners, Tabasco Cat’s progeny have earned $17,389,731 just prior to the time of his death. His stud career peaked in 2001-’02 when Snow Ridge won the San Carlos Handicap (G1) plus four other graded stakes, Cat’s At Home won the ‘02 Philip H. Iselin Handicap (G2), and Habibti won the ‘01 Hollywood Starlet (G1) and Del Mar Debutante (G1) Stakes. Tabasco Cat's 180 winners from 236 starters included eight graded/group stakes victors. Island Sand is out of the unrace Forty Niner mare Sue's Last Dance. However, Sue is a half sister to Niigon, who was second in the Grey Breeders' Cup (GII-C) in an abbreviated three-race career at age two. While this first generation does not indicate much about the distaff side's talent level, the second is a different story. Savethelastdance, "Sue's" dam, has four siblings that were either stakes winners or stakes placed. Savethelastdance herself won $204,389 and was second in the Regret and third in the Mrs. Revere, both on the turf at Churchill Downs. Her sibling winners include Raslaan, at grade three winner in Australia and Eternal Search, who won 15 stakes over four years and earned over $640,000 while competing mostly in Canada.
