HALFBRIDLED - Wertheimer Farm's Halfbridled was the dominant member of her crop at two. She was unbeaten and unchallenged in four races that included a romp in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (GI) at Santa Anita, one of four Breeders' Cup victories on that memorable day for trainer Richard Mandella. She has opened her 3-year-old season with a pair of runner-up finishes to Oaks rivals Silent Sighs in the Santa Anita Oaks (GI) and Victory U.S.A. in the Stonerside Beaumont at Keeneland. The homebred daughter of 1990 Kentucky Derby winner Unbridled will be ridden in the Oaks by Alex Solis, who is seeking his first victory in the race. Wertheimer Farm and Mandella are also looking for their first success in the event. |

Halfbridled is by Unbridled, champion three year old colt in 1990 and winner of the Kentucky Derby (G1), Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), and Florida Derby (G1) that year. He earned nearly $4.5 million during his career, finishing with an 8-6-6 record from 24 lifetime starts. To date, Unbridled is the sire of 37 stakes winners, ten Grade one winners, four classic winners, and two champions. He passed away in 2001, and his last foals will be two year olds in 2004. Among his winners are several who raced very well at Churchill Downs: Banshee Breeze (second in the Kentucky Oaks), Empire Maker (second in the Derby), Grindstone (1996 winner of the Derby), and Belterra (winner of the Golden Rod). He also sired Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winners Unbridled’s Song and Anees. Halfbridled is the first foal, and only one to race, from her dam Half Queen. Half Queen raced only six times, with one win; breaking her maiden going 6 ½ furlongs at Del Mar. She is a half sister, both being out of At The Half, to $1.8 million earner Lu Ravi, who only missed getting a piece of the purse only once in her 26 race career. At The Half also had a strong affinity for the Churchill racing surface, where she was a perfect three for three, with wins in the Pocahontas Stakes and the Golden Rod (G3).
