ASHADO - Starlight Stable, Paul Saylor and John Martin's daughter of Saint Ballado has been one of the stars of her generation since she launched her career with a seven-length romp in her career debut at Belmont Park in June. Trained by Todd Pletcher, Ashado won Saratoga's Spinaway (Grade I) and was runner-up to Halfbridled in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (GI) to highlight a stellar 2-year-old season. She opened 2004 with a romp in the Fair Grounds Oaks (GII) and then ran a close second to unbeaten Kentucky Oaks favorite Madcap Escapade in the Ashland (GI) at Keeneland. Ashado has a record of 5-2-1 in eight races with earnings of $890,800. A win in the Oaks would be the first for her owners, trainer and jockey Mike Smith. Ashado is by Saint Ballado, who passed away in 2002 following complications from surgery. During his racing career, Saint Ballado won the Arlington Classic (G2) and the Sheridan Stakes (G3). At the time of his death, he had sired seven crops of racing age, with 35 stakes winners to his credit. In addition to Ashado, his stakes performers include Captain Bodgit, winner of the Florida Derby (G1) and Wood Memorial (G2); Yankee Victor, winner of the Metropolitan Handicap (G1); and Sister Act, winner of the Hempstead Handicap (G1). Ashado is the second starter out of her dam Goulash, the other being a full sister who won on both dirt and turf. Goulash had a solid race record of 6-2-2 from 12 starts, with a win in the restricted Las Ninas Stakes and second by a head to multiple Grade 1 winner Listening in the Linda Vista Handicap (G3) at age three. While her lone stakes win did come sprinting, she was never worse than third in her four races around two turns, which indicates that Ashado should be suited to the 1 1/8 miles of the Kentucky Oaks.
